Foundation preparation

The slab is only as good as the ground beneath it.

Foundation earthworks are not simply a scrape and a load of aggregate. The finished platform must match the plans, specified materials, compaction requirements and tolerances needed by the trades following us.

We work from site and foundation plans to establish the required cut, remove unsuitable material, place approved fill in controlled layers and trim the platform to the required level. Access, drainage, spoil handling and material deliveries are considered before work begins.

House foundationsSite cuts, undercut, hardfill placement and preparation for conventional, RibRaft and engineered foundation systems.
Shed foundationsLarge building pads prepared with suitable fill, controlled compaction, falls and accurate final grading.
Complex sitesHillside, soft-ground and restricted-access sites sequenced around ground conditions and engineering requirements.
Complete site worksFoundation preparation coordinated with accessways, drainage, services, retaining, cartage and surrounding earthworks.
Our scope

From initial cut to prepared platform.

The exact scope depends on the geotechnical report, foundation design and site conditions, but TBT can manage the complete earthworks component.

Site cuts and strippingTopsoil stripping, bulk cut and excavation to design levels.
Undercut and remediationRemoval of unsuitable or soft material to the required depth.
Engineered fillApproved aggregate supplied, placed and compacted in controlled layers.
RibRaft preparationSubgrade and hardfill prepared for RibRaft foundation construction.
Ring foundationsExcavation and preparation coordinated to the foundation layout and levels.
Laser gradingAccurate final trimming and grading ready for handover.
Cartage and disposalUnsuitable spoil removed and required materials delivered efficiently.
Drainage and accessTemporary or permanent site access and drainage incorporated where required.

How we approach it

A controlled earthworks sequence.

Good preparation reduces delays, rehandling and disputes between trades. We establish the scope early and leave the site ready for the next stage.

01
Plans and site reviewWe review access, levels, foundation drawings, geotechnical information and the intended construction sequence.
02
Cut and unsuitable-material removalThe site is stripped and excavated, with unsuitable material separated and removed as required.
03
Fill placement and compactionSpecified material is placed in layers and compacted to meet the project requirements.
04
Final grading and handoverThe platform is trimmed to the required levels and left accessible and ready for following contractors.
Common questions

Foundation earthworks FAQs.

Do you work directly from engineering and foundation plans?

Yes. We use the available site, geotechnical and foundation information to price and plan the earthworks scope. Survey or engineering input can be coordinated where the project requires it.

Can you supply and compact the foundation fill?

Yes. We can arrange suitable aggregate, cartage, controlled placement and compaction. The specified material and testing requirements should be confirmed before work starts.

Do you prepare RibRaft and ring foundations?

Yes. We carry out earthworks preparation for RibRaft, conventional ring, engineered and large shed foundation systems, working to the relevant drawings and levels.

Can you complete the surrounding site works too?

Yes. TBT can coordinate the foundation work with site cuts, drainage, retaining, driveways, service trenches, spoil removal and general site preparation.

Where do you complete foundation earthworks?

We work throughout Christchurch, the Port Hills, Banks Peninsula, Selwyn, Waimakariri and wider North Canterbury, subject to the project scope.

What do you need to price the job?

Send the site address, foundation and site plans, geotechnical information if available, photographs and the expected construction timeframe.
