Failed Retaining Wall Replacement and Access Solution in Diamond Harbour

A practical solution for a difficult Diamond Harbour site

We were asked to look at a steep Diamond Harbour property after a burst water main on the road above washed out a retaining wall supporting the client’s garage. The resulting landslide travelled down the bank and reached the house.

Plans had been prepared for two smaller retaining walls and a larger wall below the garage, but the main challenge was access. Previous ideas included partly dismantling the garage, craning a 20-tonne excavator in from the road above, or building a manual drilling rig for every pole hole.

Creating permanent access instead of a temporary workaround

After walking the site, we identified a more practical and cost-effective option: build a new permanent retaining wall off the old driveway and use it to create safe access into the site.

This approach gave us a workable route for machinery and materials while also adding useful, permanent access to the property. Rather than spending heavily on temporary access that would disappear at the end of the project, the client gained an improvement that remains part of the finished site.

Working with steep ground and restricted access

Diamond Harbour and the wider Banks Peninsula area can present some of the most challenging residential earthworks around Christchurch. Steep slopes, narrow paths, neighbouring buildings and limited truck access all influence the machinery and construction sequence we choose.

For this project, we initially used our eight-tonne excavator to establish access and remove larger vegetation. We then changed to a smaller six-tonne machine where the available working room tightened. Matching the machine to each stage allowed us to work efficiently without creating unnecessary excavation or access damage.

What a failed retaining-wall replacement can involve

A retaining-wall replacement is rarely limited to removing old timber and installing new posts. Depending on the site, our work can include:

• stabilising or safely accessing the failed area;
• removing slip material and damaged wall components;
• clearing trees or vegetation where required;
• benching steep ground for safe machine access;
• augering and concreting new retaining-wall poles;
• installing drainage, filter fabric and free-draining backfill;
• controlled backfilling and compaction; and
• reshaping the finished ground for drainage and future use.
