Major hillside earthworks and retaining walls in Cashmere

We recently completed the finishing stages of a substantial residential earthworks project in Cashmere, Christchurch. The job involved approximately 70 linear metres of timber retaining wall across two separate walls, bulk excavation, bulk filling and full preparation of the house slab area.

With more than 550m³ of aggregate required beneath and around the proposed slab, this was not a small cut-and-fill exercise. It needed careful sequencing so the retaining structures, access, fill placement and building platform all worked together.

What the Cashmere project involved

Our work on this hillside site included:

• bulk excavation and shaping of the building area;
• construction of upper and lower timber retaining walls;
• importing, placing and compacting more than 550m³ of approved aggregate;
• forming stable working access across the site;
• building up the platform in controlled layers; and
• final slab preparation ready for the next stage of construction.

Managing cut and fill on a sloping Christchurch site

Cashmere sites often involve steep grades, restricted access and significant changes in level. Before we start shifting material, we look at how the excavation, retaining walls, drainage and finished platform will interact. A practical sequence saves double handling and gives every crew following us a safer, more reliable site to work from.

On this project, the retaining walls were an essential part of controlling the level changes and creating usable ground. Once the walls and drainage were ready, we could place the imported aggregate in controlled layers and compact it progressively. This helps provide consistent support instead of simply building up a large volume of loose fill at once.

Why accurate fill placement matters beneath a house slab

The work below a slab is largely hidden once construction is complete, but it has a major influence on the finished build. Correct material selection, layer thickness, moisture control and compaction all matter. We coordinate our work with the project requirements and leave the platform prepared to the required lines and levels.

We also keep an eye on site access throughout the job. More than 550m³ of aggregate means a large number of truck movements, so delivery areas and machine movements need to remain practical while the platform takes shape.
