Preparing an 800m² shed pad in Leeston

We recently got started on the earthworks for an 800m² Wide Span shed pad in Leeston. Before we could begin the main shed excavation, we stripped several hundred cubic metres of existing horse-arena topping and stockpiled it separately on site.

Keeping the arena material separate means it stays clean and can be reused later, instead of being mixed through the excavated ground or unnecessarily carted away.

What goes into preparing a large shed pad?

There is more to a shed pad than simply levelling off an area. We need to work to the shed design and finished floor levels while allowing for the ground conditions, drainage, access and the next stages of construction.

Depending on the site and design, our shed-pad earthworks can include:

• checking the required set-out and finished levels;
• stripping topsoil or existing surface materials;
• cutting the building platform to the correct level;
• removing unsuitable material;
• supplying, placing and compacting approved quarry fill;
• forming accessways, drainage and surrounding yard areas; and
• preparing the site for footings, services and the concrete floor.

Separating useful material saves waste

On this Leeston job, the existing horse-arena topping was a substantial amount of useful material. By stripping and stockpiling it first, we protected its value and kept the shed excavation clean. This type of planning can reduce unnecessary disposal and make later landscaping or arena work much easier.

Once the topping was clear, we could move into the shed excavation and prepare the building area accurately. Where imported fill is required, it needs to be placed in controlled layers and compacted properly to provide consistent support for the proposed structure.
